Zemlya (1930)

"A peculiar Soviet film, supposedly a favorite of Andrei Tarkovsky who re-watched it every time he would start shooting a new movie. Together with Martin de Ruiter I made a brand new score where we tried to highlight the almost endearingly positive belief in the glory of a future Communist society, embodied by the arrival of a brand new tractor in a little town. The synth pieces I contributed were quite melancholic actually, I could not help but feel that way, knowing what became of those high hopes"

Director: Alexander Dovzhenko

Running time: 96 min

Commissioned by Eye Filmmuseum

Performed live on 22/9/2019 with Martin de Ruiter
